The Stoic Trick for Separating What You Control From What You Don't

Most frustration comes from fighting for outcomes you were never actually in charge of. The Stoics built an entire discipline around telling the difference.

Two Piles, Not One

The Stoics divided the world into what's within your power — your choices, effort and attention — and what isn't: other people's opinions, the weather, the outcome of something already in motion. Most anxiety comes from treating the second pile like it belongs in the first.

Sort Before You React

  • Name what you're worried about, then ask: is this actually mine to control?
  • If it isn't, redirect the energy toward the one thing that still is — your response.
  • If it is, stop worrying about it and go do something about it instead.

Peace Comes From the Sorting, Not the Outcome

The goal was never to control more of the world. It was to stop wasting effort on the part that was never yours to control in the first place.
