The Negotiator’s Reset: How to De-escalate Conflict in 60 Seconds
December 29, 2025
Why Conflict Escalates So Fast
Most conflict is a nervous system event before it’s a communication problem. People don’t feel heard, they feel threatened. The fastest path back to collaboration is lowering perceived threat and restoring psychological safety.
The 60-Second Reset
- Pause and breathe once before responding so you don’t mirror the heat.
- Name the emotion neutrally: 'This feels tense' or 'I can see this matters.'
- Ask one clarifying question: 'What outcome would feel fair to you?'
Return to Shared Goals
Once the temperature drops, shift to collaboration. Use language like 'Let’s solve this together' and define the problem as something you both face, not something you are to each other.
